SERIES DOCUMENTARY 7 x 48 minutes
Producer: Rudolf Rieger

Director: Johann Abrahams

The untold Khoekhoe story of survival is brought to us through a journey of discovery by our presenters, Rehane Abrahams and Jolene Martin – both proud descendant of the Khoekhoe – in their quest to understand the roots, history, identity, traditions, culture and contemporary living of our First Nation. On this journey they visit remaining Khoekhoe communities across South Africa.

It is a fascinating journey of discovery that takes the viewer to far flung communities such as Pella on the banks of the Gariep (Orange River) and Wupperthal, Cederberg. We also uncover the hidden history of heroes, Doman, Gonnema, Jan Paerl, Zara Schmelin, Krotoa and David Sturman.

With breathtaking visuals and colourful characters, we bring the story of the Khoekhoe herders to life through fireside story-telling, drama, poetry, music, dance, ancient art and food.

Modern interpretation of historical records, rock paintings, and excavations by historians and anthropologists, will reveal a new narrative - a story of survival of a people that faced an onslaught from early European visitors and later the Dutch and British settlers, military subjugation, dispossession of land and a threat to its culture, stretching over thousands of years, still continuing until today.
